The Culture of Belonging at Allianz
A couple of years ago, at an employee trivia event, Patrick introduced the fantastic Walter Melon to the team at Allianz.
Walter - Patrick’s charismatic drag alter-ego - has given Patrick the strength and freedom to express himself wholeheartedly, and through bringing his authentic self to work, he firmly believes he’s been able to be a better employee.
“Allianz has given me the confidence to be who I am and allows me to be me. It's about being respected and not made to feel different.”
A journey with Allianz
Patrick joined Allianz just over 10 years ago, starting in direct sales and service, before moving through a variety of customer-facing roles and landing in his current role in the Customer Quality team a few years ago.
“As part of the Customer Quality Team, I’m very proud of the work I do. I listen to customer calls and support our consultants to deliver compliant and enjoyable interactions for our customers. Our team are always looking to improve and learn - we’re all really committed to providing a great customer experience.”
At the age of 26, Patrick decided to come out, and as he tells us, he’s still overwhelmed by the support he received from his team at Allianz.
“My team leader at the time threw me a little coming out morning tea, which was such a lovely surprise! I still get a bit teary eyed thinking about the kindness and support the team gave me.”
Introducing Walter Melon to the world
Since Walter Melon’s debut at an Allianz team trivia event in 2020, she’s entertained Patrick’s colleagues many times.
Walter’s “glampy” mix of ‘glamour and camp' fills Patrick with a sense of freedom and empowerment. Through the creation and evolution of Walter, Patrick has embraced a newfound confidence in all areas of his life.
“Walter has given me more confidence, both in and out of drag. When I’m on stage I feel free... Drag has shaped who I am today both as Patrick, and as Walter Melon.”
Being true to who you are
Throughout his life, Patrick has learned a lot about living authentically and embracing his truth.
“I’d love to be able to tell my younger self that while you will go through some difficult times, you will come out the other side stronger than before.”
Best of all, he’d reassure young Patrick that he would find a company and career that he loves, and that cares about everything that makes him who he is.
