Harmonizing career and motherhood

Maggie studied commerce at university and got her start in banking as an investment accountant. But a few years into her career, she decided to broaden her horizons and was led to an opportunity in insurance. That’s how she landed at Allianz.

“After a while in the workplace and a few years into my insurance career, I thought ‘How have I developed my insurance knowledge? What can I do further? ’I became interested in the renewable energy space where there's a lot happening, and I was looking to be a part of developing and driving those projects- Allianz made sense for me.”

"I joined Allianz in 2014 in a senior account technician role, working on international programs across a number of lines including property, liability and energy. Allianz has such a great reputation, and I knew that by going to work for such a big global brand, there were lots of opportunities to venture into different, emerging areas. A mentorship program in 2018 provided me with the opportunity to further my interest in energy & construction underwriting, which is a space I’m so passionate about and still work in today."

Continuous learning & development

For Maggie, the breadth of different learning opportunities available at Allianz has been key to keeping her engaged and thriving in her career.

“I've had a lot of exposure right across the organisation in Australia and overseas, working with teams in the International Programs space. We have a lot of talent programs, which are good for someone like me who is always keen to learn.”

“My leader put me forward for a mentoring program, which was a huge breakthrough for me because I was able to ask questions about how to fill my skills gaps and focus my learning. At the same time, I took up a TAFE course in Civil Engineering to grow my foundational knowledge and help me with my work.”

As far as Maggie is concerned, it’s the people at Allianz that make it a great place to work, knowing that she is supported and encouraged to develop.

“The people here really are unlike anywhere else. I can talk openly to my leader about my career aspirations – it’s a very collaborative relationship. I know that when opportunities come up, they’ll think of me and put me forward.”

Finding the right balance as a working mother

As a single mum, flexibility is vital for Maggie to balance her work and home life, and just as importantly, take care of herself. As she says, women who may not have considered a career in insurance for this reason should take a closer look.

“There’s so much to juggle as a working parent. Having leaders and colleagues understand and help manage my workload has meant I can make parent-teacher interviews, take study days, be a part of learning programs and so on. It’s a really great work/life balance, and very different to any workplace I’ve experienced before in terms of flexibility."

“A career in insurance may not be top-of-mind for some women because of it’s been seen as a traditionally male-dominated industry. But I’ve been so fortunate to work at Allianz where my commitments as a woman and as a mum, haven’t impeded my learning and the opportunities available to me. I’m fully supported in balancing my work, my personal life and my development. I love it here.”
