Joshua Sprake, a Head of Technical Risk Advisory, finds it remarkable how Allianz Australia, one of the world's largest insurers, effectively manages the balance between its global reach and local focus.

Despite leveraging an impressive range of products and services through a global network of financial experts, Allianz remains steadfast in meeting the unique needs of local customers.

"The local focus, but with a global reach sets Allianz apart from other insurers in Australia, and any other company I've worked for before," Joshua commented. "I can seriously develop my career here because Allianz understands and embraces the differences, learnings and opportunities locally here in Australia, and overseas."

In his role supporting Customer and Operations, Joshua works within a team dedicated to risk and compliance. He assists business leaders in identifying, assessing, and managing risks while ensuring customer activities comply with regulations, guiding the business in navigating its risk management framework and conducting risk assessments.

One of the highlights of working at Allianz for Joshua is the alignment he feels with his values and goals, and those of the organisation.

"Working in Operations is very fulfilling. At every stage of the product and customer lifecycle, we prioritise positive customer outcomes and it's not just about achieving efficiency (which is important); we also prioritise risk reduction," Joshua explained.

Constantly challenging himself to view situations from the customer's perspective and seeking simplicity and impact brings him joy.

"I appreciate our leaders' openness to being challenged to achieve the best possible outcomes. We’re encourage to bring an entrepreneurial mindset to the table which adds authenticity to the work we do," he added.

In traditional corporate organisations, misconceptions and stereotypes about diversity can be harmful, making people feel uncomfortable or fearful to express their true selves at work. Joshua, like many people, recognises and values the power of bringing your authentic self to work, helping engagement and productivity along the way. That's why Joshua strongly believes in the significance of celebrating LGBTQ+ pride.

"It’s essential to celebrate diversity, including LGBTQ+ pride, to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to be their authentic selves at work. I firmly believe that celebrating occasions like Pride will have long-lasting positive impact on employee wellbeing which ultimately leads to a better result for our business, but also importantly, our customers. Happy, engaged employees do good work, it’s that simple.

Recalling the experience of walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge for World Pride 2023, Joshua beams with enthusiasm and pride.

"The sense of belonging I felt walking with people from all over the world, was incredible. Sydney was alive with displays, signs and colourful buildings all celebrating World Pride - it was a truly a sight to behold. This major global event was also celebrated at Allianz and resonated deeply with me. Pride is an integral part of my identity, and knowing my company respects that, reinforces my feeling of belonging here," he shared.
