In coordination with the Head of Claims - Canada, the Director of Long Tail Claims – Canada will direct the strategy and handling of all long tail claims in Canada. The Director of Long Tail Claims - Canada will:

  • Work closely with Underwriting and Market Management ‘MM’ to develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients 
  • Work collaboratively with Legal & Compliance, Finance, Actuarial, Chief Claims Office and other key stakeholders to ensure all aspects of claims are administered within guidelines 
  • Manage the day-to-day function of the Claims team in Canada to support the lines of business and provide technical claim guidance

 

The Impact You Will Have

  • Claims Strategy
    • Assist with the execution of the North American Claims strategy
    • Contribute to the development of global Claims Line of Business ‘LoB’ strategy
    • Support the development of cross LoB regional strategy, in line with Market Management ‘MM’, the Head of Claims - North America and the Regional CEO.
  • Claims Targets
    • Assist with driving the achievement of financial targets (e.g. ALAE Management)
    • Contribute to annual productivity setting for Claims
    • Ensure case claims reserves and settlements are consistent with exposures
    • Assist the actuarial team with IBNR, KBNR and development factors
  • Market Management
    • Proactively support acquisition of new business and retention of existing business
    • Coordinate with local MM to drive successful execution of strategic plan

 

  • Claims Approach and Compliance
    • Ensure claim handling consistency and discipline through management of the claims file review process in accordance with corporate and local guidelines
    • Provide technical claims guidance and settlement authority   
    • Evaluate and assign appropriate claims autonomy to team; including auditing files to ensure autonomy levels and claim practices are adhered to

 

  • Leading and Managing Claims Team
    • Lead and manage regional team, including direct reports and matrix management of functional reports
    • Assist with managing cost center budget within plan
    • Continuous evaluation and execution of formal and informal staff development plans

 

  • Relationship Management
    • Positively represent Allianz Commercial internally within the Allianz Group, and externally to the market
    • Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Claims process, including e.g. MM, ARC, Underwriting, Finance, Actuarial, Operations
    • Responsible for providing the Regional Claims Head with regular updates regarding events/activities in the region/product area
    • Seek guidance from Regional Claims Head and Chief Claims Office ‘CCO’ on issues that have an impact on the region and company

 

  • Referrals and Compliance
    • Ensure all claims handled within authority limits, and in line with Allianz Commercial Claims complex procedures and guidelines
    • Support establishment of claims management procedures on new business accounts in association with clients, brokers and Third-Party Adjusting firms
    • Undertake audits of internal adjusters and external service providers as appropriate

 

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • Bachelors degree: Preferably a degree in Economics, Law, or other appropriate discipline
  • Strategic Planning: Ability to develop, implement, and communicate strategies to address important trends or changes in the business
  • Managing people: Ability to lead and manage a team of claims technicians; Including the ability to delegate tasks, steer team direction/goals, etc.
  • Coaching: Ability to advise, instruct, direct, and guide as a coach to help someone develop his/her skills
  • Prior experience recognizing opportunities for improvement, making thorough recommendations and championing causes to management
  • Completion of professional insurance designation (Eg. CIP, FCIP, CPCU, RPLU, CRM, FRM, ARM) or a comparable Claim designation is a plus
  • Products and Coverages: understanding in relevant products, wordings, terms and conditions and coverages
  • Claims Handling: knowledge of claims handling process from notification to settlement and recovery
  • Reserving: Treaty and Facultative reinsurance and coinsurance; Knowledge of reserving principles and practices
  • Litigation: understanding of relevant legal processes and procedures, litigation management, litigation avoidance techniques (e.g. mediation etc.)
  • Communication skills: Clearly and effectively express ideas and messages via speech or writing
  • Negotiation and conflict management: Ability to negotiate best position for Allianz Commercial and clients, often in contentious situations, managing conflicting priorities of various parties
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to effectively absorb information from various sources, then analyze, study, or examine data in detail, and draw appropriate conclusions                        

                                                                   

The annualized base pay range for this role is $108,850 to $186,667. The annual base salary range represents a nationwide market range. The actual salary for this position may be above and will be determined by several factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role, the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate. The base pay is just one component of the AzC total compensation package.  As part of our comprehensive compensation and highly rated benefits programs, employees are also eligible for annual performance-based cash incentive awards.
