Within the Accounting department, this position will be responsible for preparing for compliance to federal, state and local tax laws and regulations.  This position will also have responsibilities pertaining to general ledger accounting and financial reporting and will work closely with our contracted tax consultants, statutory reporting team, external advisors regarding the Company’s financial tax reporting and compliance.  This position will manage the workflow and provide staff support for a small team.  This position is a key member of the Accounting team, collectively ensuring the timely filing of all tax related items.

 

 

Key Responsibilities and Duties

 

  • Liaise with our contracted tax consultants on the preparation of the quarterly tax provisions for all US and Canada entities.
  • Review and post the US federal income tax, state income tax and Canada corporate income tax entries from our contracted tax consultants on a quarterly and annual basis so that management can provide sign off and our tax consultants can file out tax returns in a timely manner.
  • Provide internal documentation to the Canada tax consultant for the preparation of the annual Canada tax provision.
  • Review the annual Canada tax provision for accuracy so that management can sign off on the provision.
  • Prepare and post the US federal income tax accrual on off quarter end months.
  • Prepare the off-quarter Canada corporate estimated income tax payments and post the associated journal entries.
  • Review, post and create payments for the US and Canada annual extension payments.
  • Support the Country by Country Reporting on an annual basis for the US and Canada entities.
  • Support the Tax Transparency Reporting on an annual basis for the US and Canada entities.
  • Review and prepare local adjustments to transfer pricing documentation and intra US zone service agreements for extraordinary items related to the financial statements.
  • Review the tax footnotes drafted by our tax consultant on an annual basis.
  • Provide internal and external audit support related to the US, state and Canada corporate income tax returns and controls for the tax process.
  • Monitor and review the BEAT Tax on a quarterly and annual basis by providing supporting documentation to prepare the BEAT calculation for the region to our tax consultant.
  • Responsible for annual application to the IRS for the US Certificate of Residency and to the CRA for the Canada Certificate of Residency.
  • Calculate the personal use of automobiles used by the Regional Management Team on an annual basis.
  • Attend the quarterly tax meeting with the Allianz Trade Group tax team and provide updates on the regions performance and any tax updates.
  • Prepare the monthly and annual filing related to the Canada Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).
  • Serve as the main point of contact with our US tax consultant and our Canada tax consultant.
  • Responsible for any ad-hoc related requests related to tax from the Allianz Trade Group, IRS, CRA, state revenue departments and internal and external auditors.
  • Provide total revenues with external customers in the US per legal entity to Allianz Trade Legal on an annual basis.
  • Prepare Forms W-9 for the holding, insurance and collections companies that reflect the current tax year on an annual basis.
  • Complete the Transfer Pricing processes for intracompany and intercompany relationships.
  • Prepare and file the monthly and quarterly excise tax returns for the US entities (excluding any reinsurance) with the IRS.
  • Prepare the monthly and quarterly excise tax returns for the reinsurance portion of the business and provide the return to the Group Reinsurance team so they can file those with the IRS.
  • Responsible for completing monthly balance sheet reconciliations related to the tax accounts.
  • Responsible for leading the quarterly local tax committee meetings with CFAO, Head of Accounting and Head of Controlling.
  • Monitor changes in the tax accounting standards under US GAAP, IFRS and SSAP.
  • Manage the senior tax accountant who works directly with completing annual, quarterly and monthly returns for state premium tax, state sales tax, personal property tax and franchise tax.

 

Required Qualifications and Skills

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance.
  • 4-7 years’ experience in income tax compliance and GL accounting, insurance industry preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and Word skills.
  • Experience with or ability to learn software systems such as SAP.
  • Willingness to work required overtime when necessary at high volume filing timeframe.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • CPA & Public Accounting experience preferred.
  • Understanding of U.S. & state income tax laws.
  • Strong general ledger accounting fundamentals
  • Ability to learn and comply with changing tax and reporting requirements of multiple states/countries
  • Must be detail oriented with the ability to analyze tax, financial and operational information.
  • Legal/regulatory research
  • Managing a small team (including workflow and staff support)
  • Knowledge of insurance industry preferred
  • Financial analysis, reporting and forecasting
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with other members of the team as well as work independently & accurately.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills for business dealings with governments, auditors and regulatory agencies ‘contacts.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, & problem-solving skills.
  • High level of initiative & ability to be autonomous.
