We currently have a great opportunity to work in our Mid-Market Portfolio Steering team as an Underwriting Analyst, with a particular focus on either Commercial Motor, Engineering or Property & Casualty.

The Mid-Market Portfolio Steering team sits within the Commercial Underwriting department and closely works with the Underwriting Account teams, Underwriting branches, Pricing, Data, Claims and Actuarial teams to provide recommendations and decisions to support the profitable management of the Mid-Market lines of business. This role would be perfect for an ambitious Underwriter looking to be more involved in
strategic activities, gain exposure to senior stakeholders and looking to upskill your data capabilities whilst using your underwriting expertise.
You will contribute to the development, production and analysis of data, using appropriate data feeds to create actionable business insight to the Commercial Motor, Property & Casualty or Motor Trade team whilst deputising on a secondary line of business to provide the greatest depth of analysis and insight in the reporting – and don’t worry if you don’t have this experience in data analysis, we will provide all the training you need. You just need an interest and willingness to learn this part of the role.
The key responsibilities of the role include:
- Producing and presenting steering insights on a regular basis to underwriting teams, informing stakeholders how best to act on current trends affecting the portfolio
- Owning the reporting and data analysis of the Commercial Motor, Property & Casualty or Motor Trade account, using this data to create actionable insight to provide to the account team to consider implementing into the account strategy
- Taking proactive ownership of the analysis of data and provision of insight on current and emerging trends, both internal and external, that effect our insurance lines of business and results
- Provide appropriate data production and reporting, ensuring the portfolio mix is aligned with strategy and ensuring appropriate balance of growth and ultimate profitability is realised, resulting in achievement of Corporate Plan objectives
- Support the data teams in the production and creation of core data sets for new tooling and products, including liaising with the regions and account teams to understand emerging data needs
- Grow an understanding of multiple commercial lines of business to be able to simplify reporting and cross pollinate ideas between account teams
- Work alongside the pricing team to shape, develop and embed new and existing pricing methodologies into the portfolio rhythm
About You
Essential:
- A background in commercial underwriting
- Proven ability to understand key underwriting concepts and principles
- Data analysis skills
- Strong interpersonal skills including excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prepare reports with a high attention to detail
- Makes consistently sound decisions in own area of expertise or responsibility and refers when appropriate
- Able to use initiative and approach challenges innovatively
Desirable:
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel – or a willingness to upskill in this area
- Knowledge of SAS Enterprise Guide or experience with SQL – or a willingness to upskill in this area
- Experience with visualisation tools such as MicroStrategy or Qlik Sense – or a willingness to upskill in this area
- ACII qualified or progression towards
