About the Engineer Surveyors Apprenticeship

Engineer Surveyors provide a vital role in enabling the safe operation of plant equipment and installations which protect employees and the public who use them. The Engineer Surveyor Apprenticeship will set you up with the skills and qualifications to support our clients' safety and move into a highly flexible and autonomous role as an Engineer Surveyor upon completion.

Start date

The application window for the upcoming Engineer Surveyor Apprenticeship program wil open on the 1st April and concluded on the 3rd May 2024, and the program is set to begin in October 2024.

Length and outcome

This two-year apprenticeship will be split between working on the job and studying.

By the end of the apprenticeship, you will have achieved professional status (MSOE & Eng Tech) and a Higher (level 4) apprenticeship, enabling you to progress into the role of an Engineer Surveyor.

In the longer term, you will have the foundation to work towards a role leading a team, management, and more if this is where you would like to go.

What we look for

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Qualification in an engineering related subject (ONC, OND, Tech. Cert at least T3 level, NVQ level 3, or equivalent)
  • Full UK driving license
  • Valid work permit for permanent work in the UK

How do I apply?

What do I need for the application? 

Just your usual CV will suffice for the main part of the application.

In the application, we will be looking for your motivation for joining us. We believe that Allianz is an exciting place to work, and we want to see that reflected in your application. We don’t expect you to be an expert, as we will develop your expertise once you join us. This is your chance to research us and what we do and demonstrate your understanding in your application.

While we love technology and digital advancements, your application will be read carefully by one of our teams. So please keep in mind that this might take us a little longer to get back to you.

What happens after I submit the application? 

After you submit your initial application, you will undergo a telephone interview. If successful, you will be invited to an assessment centre which will have  a competency-based operational and technical knowledge interview conducted by one of our Operations Managers.

    The role of an engineer surveyor is incredibly varied; you could be inspecting anything from a commercial boiler or forklift truck to a major piece of construction plant on a daily basis depending on your area of discipline. Within Allianz Engineering, Construction & Power, there are 5 specialist divisions you can join which consist of Lift & Crane, Pressure Mechanical, Electrical, LEV, and Power Press.

Why should I join Allianz Engineer Surveyor Apprenticeship Scheme?

The Allianz Engineer Surveyor apprenticeship is a SAFed approved structured training programme, which gives you a chance to work towards a bespoke qualification. It will help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen role as an Engineer Surveyor. You will also benefit from working for the market leading high performing organisation.

What if I have the qualifications but not the hands on experience, can I apply?

Unfortunately, no. A minimum of 3 years hands on engineering experience is essential for all applicants as per the entry requirements detailed in the Engineer Surveyor Apprenticeship Standard.

Is there an age requirement?

No, as long as the minimum application requirements are met, there are no age restrictions on who can apply.

What is the recruitment / interview process?

Following your initial application, there will be a telephone interview. If successful, you will be invited to undergo a competency based operational interview, carried out by one of our Operations Managers, and a technical knowledge interview, carried out by one of our Specialist Engineers.

Where and when will the interviews take place?

The initial telephone interviews will take place between 8th April and 24th May 2024. If successful at telephone interview, you will be invited to attend an interview; these will take place on 19th and 20th June 2024 at our head office in Milton Keynes.

Are there intake dates, how long is the scheme?

The intake date will be 7th October 2024. The apprenticeship is a 2 Year programme and you will learn and progress with your cohort.

Will there be a position at the end of the apprenticeship / do I have to work for Allianz at the end of the scheme?

All apprentices that successfully complete the 2 Year programme will move to a full time permanent employment contract. There is no contractual obligation to work for Allianz at the end of the apprenticeship; however, we would love you to continue being a valued member of the team.

How much studying will I need to do in my own time?

As with all learning there may be times where additional academic work will be required to be completed away from the college. Appropriate time will be given to assist with completion of this as well as additional support and coaching.

What is the induction process?

All employees will attend a full induction into Allianz, this will be delivered by our Engineering team at our office in Milton Keynes.

Where is the college-based training taking place?

The college training will take place at Fareham College, Meteor Way, Lee-on-the Solent, Hampshire, PO13 9FU: https://www.fareham.ac.uk/

How many weeks will be spent at Fareham College?

The academic learning delivered at Fareham College will be delivered over 15 weeks, split across the 2 years. The delivery blocks are typically 1 – 2 weeks at a time.

Will there be periods of time when I am learning / training away from home?

There will be a requirement to attend training periods at Fareham College and at our office in Milton Keynes, depending on where you are based will determine whether you will be expected to stay away or commute daily. Typically, there are 15 weeks of college over the two-year course. You will also undertake hands on field-based training where there may be a requirement to stay away from home. All associated costs will be reimbursed by Allianz.

How is the training split between learning and inspection activities?

A requirement of the apprenticeship is that a minimum of 20% of your time is off the job learning. This will be delivered through time at the college and in house at Allianz.

Who will be training me?

Your academic and engineering learning will be delivered by Fareham College. Your field based and operational training will be delivered in house at Allianz and via carefully selected training partners.

What support will I be given throughout the scheme?

Allianz has a well-established employee support network, which you will have full access to. In addition to this, you will have monthly review meetings to ensure you are progressing as expected.

How will I be supported to ensure I pass the End Point Assessment?

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will receive group and individual support, close supervision and coaching to ensure that you are progressing in line with expectations. This will ensure that you are ready to undertake the end-point assessment (EPA). We are committed to you succeeding on the apprenticeship scheme and will work with you throughout the programme.

How will I be assessed?

Apprentices must complete an assessment at the end of their apprenticeship to show what they have learned and that they can perform all parts of their job. The assessment is called an ‘end-point assessment’.

Assessment will be undertaken by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation. The assessment will consist of a combination of the following and will take place at the end of the programme:

  • Multiple choice exam
  • Site observation
  • Professional discussion

On completion of the apprenticeship, could I continue studying to obtain a degree?

A level 4 apprenticeship is equivalent to a foundation degree, a Higher National Certificate (HNC), or the first year of an undergraduate degree. Following the completion of your apprenticeship, we encourage all employees to undertake Continued Professional Development (CPD) and structure this in their own Personal Development Plans (PDP).

Will my salary increase when I have completed the scheme?

There will be incremental salary increases throughout the programme and a significant salary increase on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

How much holiday will I have?

You will be entitled to 26 days annual holiday, plus all UK bank holidays.

Will I have a company car?

Yes, all apprentices will be entitled to a company car in line with our current company car policy. This is fully insured and fleet managed by Allianz and can be used for personal mileage.

What benefits will I be entitled to whilst on the scheme?

You will be entitled to all benefits as per current Engineer Surveyors, including a company car, Engineer Surveyor allowance, group personal pension, Life Assurance (4x salary), share save scheme, volunteering hours and many more.
