Understanding Career Transitions

  • In today’s working environment your career will rarely follow a straight line from start to retirement. New job opportunities arise, life throws challenges and wonderful things at you that might result in a career break. Throughout your professional life you will most likely experience the following development stages to various degrees several times over.

  • Exploration

You find a desired career opportunity, or you identify new tasks to work on.

  • Growth

You develop and value your role, but you also learn to accept your own limitations.

  • Establishment

You do things you wanted to do, develop new skills and settle down in a suitable position.

Where are you in your career?

  • Career Starter

Getting started with a professional career is an exciting and important time! The first job may not be the lifelong career but the key is to start into the workforce and maximize every opportunity in one’s early roles.

  • Career Accelerator

Career Accelerators focus on driving their career and expanding their opportunities that brings them further up the career ladder. They have high aspirations are willing to invest in their career to realize their aspirations. Their career moves are driven by position title / status and they are looking to move up in each role. They are interested in vertical moves with a focus on people management roles, mainly because this advances their career.

  • Career Upskiller

In order to grow, expand their skills and become the best one can be in their current role, it is important to make use of the right development opportunities. Career Upskiller feel comfortable in the current role and would like to grow while staying in their position.  After working in their area for a couple of years , they decided it’s the right career path for them and they want to learn more and get some formal qualifications. Upskilling shows they are dedicated to moving forward in their area with a focus on maintaining and improving their skills in order to stay relevant.

  • Career Returner

Career breaks are sometimes carefully planned like maternity leaves or a travel sabbatical, but other times they come unexpectedly, like taking time out to care for a sick loved one. This career persona is all about getting back into the workforce after months or even years. They may return to their original positions or move into a different position upon returning. Career returners might be feeling a little overwhelmed about getting back into work life and feel like their skills may have become a little dusty in their time away from the workforce.

  • Career Balancer

Career balancer represents those who would like to take a step back from high workload, reduce working time and responsibilities. Depending on the needs, they may work at reduced hour (e.g., 50%), share their responsibilities with others (50-50/60-60) or other combinations. The challenge is to keep track of their career while also focusing on other areas in their lives.

  • Impact Searcher

Impact searchers want to understand where their skills are needed to make a difference. They are interested in individual journeys more than predefined paths and want to have autonomy in work life. They want to experience a multitude of opportunities and are willing to make multi-directional career moves. They may be interested in making cross-country, cross-OE and/or even cross-functional moves to diversify their skill set and identifying where they can provide the most impact.

  • Experienced Senior

Development and learning never stops. Experienced Seniors who already gathered much experiences and who feel like they need to shift their focus to providing learning opportunities and knowledge transfer to other. They may be more interested in transferring their knowledge & experiences to successors or junior colleagues as a coach or a mentor.

Career Paths from Allianz Employees

  • Leylya Biktimirova (Lily)

Senior Manager Property & Casualty - Technical, Allianz Asia Pacific

"I joined Allianz back in 2012 when I was finishing up my master’s degree in mathematics and Programming. It was the very first year that the actuarial pricing department was established, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of it."

"Now, the interesting thing is I that I didn’t specialize in actuarial mathematics, but it didn’t matter because we were all learning together. We were developing Technical Price system for Motor in Allianz Russia for the very first time and it was a very exciting time to be a part of that team. From the very beginning I felt like I was a part of a big international company. We had materials from colleagues in other countries and there was a Centre of Competence we could reach out to if we had any questions. After a couple of years, we started facing some challenges on a Russian market – changes in legislation, court claims, inflation, you name it. The company’s performance was getting worse, and we found out that there was a team from Munich coming to visit us. We were expecting some sort of audit but to my surprise they came to help they supported us in the implementation of our proposed tariff changes.

Second surprise was that they didn’t care about ranks at all – everyone’s input was important and valuable, and I was lucky enough to be involved in many decisions (partially because of my English knowledge). This was the first time I felt that we were part of a truly global community with people all around the world ready to help at any moment. Unfortunately, the situation in the market and in the country (it was after the start of Crimean crisis) was not getting any better, so Allianz decided to exit the retail business in Russia. So, I moved to finance department to do reserving.

But our effort in Motor pricing wasn’t forgotten when other countries in Central and Eastern Europe needed support with the technical pricing, our regional team from Munich invited us to join them and support other countries just like they supported us before.

That’s when I became a consultant for non-life insurance in the regional team. Although my role was originally purely actuarial, my responsibilities started expanding to cover other technical areas like underwriting, claims and product development. I got to know people from all over the world and was involved in international projects. The best part was being part of a community of experts from different countries who can always reach out to each other for support and best practice sharing.

After 4 years I wanted more challenges, knowledge, and exposure, so I reached out to my manager for advice and guidance. At this point I wasn’t surprised with Allianz culture anymore – this is place where your development is very important, and you always get support when you want to explore new opportunities. My manager helped me expand my network and encouraged me to consider opportunities in other countries. I learned that actuarial expertise is needed everywhere, so I chose to join the team in Singapore because I enjoy working in the markets where P&C insurance is less mature and more challenging.

Now, after 10 years with Allianz I know that our company cares about our future, it invests in training and knowledge sharing and encourages people to grow and take up new challenges.

I think that focus on mobility and sharing of experience brings our employees opportunities to be more flexible in their views, be more accepting of different opinions, mentalities and cultures and ultimately supports diverse and inclusive environment.

It’s been an incredible journey so far and I’m excited to see where it takes me next."

  • Sungwoo Park

Regional Chief Risk Officer, Allianz Asia Pacific

"My career with Allianz began in 2002 as a Financial Analyst with Allianz Life (Korea). I am currently the Regional Chief Risk Officer for Allianz Asia Pacific. Over the past 20 years, I've had the pleasure of learning and growing with this outstanding organisation."

"Allianz has provided me with numerous opportunities to enhance my knowledge and skills, including participation in various Finance Management & Leadership programmes and exposure to diverse job functions across four different countries, including Finance, Actuarial, Sales, and Risk. Thanks to these opportunities and experiences, I have never had a dull day at work.

One thing that sets Allianz apart from other organisations is its commitment to supporting its employees' growth and development. Allianz values the contributions of its diverse workforce and provides a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages professional and personal growth. Through well-structured management and leadership programmes, Allianz has given me the tools and resources to progress in my career, enhance my skills, and broaden my perspective.

In my experience, Allianz's well-structured management and leadership programmes have been instrumental in my career development. These programmes have not only helped me improve my skills in the Finance, Actuarial and Risk areas but have also connected me with outstanding mentors who have guided me along my career path. The relationships I have established with my mentors are priceless, and they continue to support me even long after the programmes have ended. I have been fortunate to meet and learn from exceptional mentors who have helped me navigate my career path and provided valuable insights into both work and life outside of work.

Allianz genuinely cares about the well-being of its employees. #We Care for Your Future, one of the key initiatives reflects their commitment to fostering a work environment that promotes work-life balance, mental and physical health, and career development opportunities.

I am proud to work for Allianz and grateful for the opportunities the organisation has provided me. Finance and Risk are my passions, but there's no limit to the opportunities for growth and learning here.

  • Zach Hou

Senior Associate, Asset Liability Management & Digital Innovation, Allianz Investment Management Singapore

"Allianz is the place for those who dare, making it an exceptional launchpad for aspiring young professionals. My own journey with Allianz began as an intern, where the consummate professionalism and collaborative culture facilitated a seamless transition from academia to industry. Following a fruitful internship, I was honored to accept a full-time position at AIM Singapore. Today, as a Senior Associate, I'm covering Allianz's investment management function in the APAC region, concentrating on strategic asset allocation and pioneering digital innovation. Allianz offers not only global exposure and a culture of mutual respect but also an unparalleled opportunity to mold oneself and leave a lasting impact on the world."

  • Li Siyu

Underwriter - Financial Lines, Allianz Commercial, Singapore

"I started my Allianz journey as a consultant in the Allianz Consulting APAC hub, where I collaborated with colleagues from different entities and diverse cultural backgrounds on various APAC projects. After nearly 4 years of consulting work, I moved into the Allianz Commercial Global Process Management team, where I was involved in a range of global and regional projects focused on driving productivity and improving processes. Through these initiatives, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end processes."

"Concurrently, I realized my inclination towards cultivating deeper knowledge in underwriting and expressed my interest to my manager during our development plan discussions. With the support of both the Singapore Financial Lines team and the Global Process Management team, I completed a job shadowing with Financial Lines underwriters, enabling me to learn by doing real cases. After realizing I would like to further pursue my interest in underwriting, I joined the Financial Lines team a few months later when there was an open position. I’m very grateful for the constant support and guidance from my managers, who are very committed to investing in employees’ growth and development. I think one of the best things about working at Allianz is that we are exposed to various opportunities to work across functions, entities, and regions, and Allianz fosters a dynamic work culture to enable employees to develop personally and professionally. Additionally, the presence of supportive management teams ensures that employees receive all the resources and guidance necessary to accomplish their development goals."
