Meet Abdul

  • Abdul from Allianz SE

“At Allianz, I not only feel that I can contribute and develop my international professional experience, but also that I can get involved in equal opportunities and diversity as an employee with disabilities.”

Abdul, could you tell us about yourself?

Hi, my name is Abdul, I am 57 years old. In October 2019, I joined Allianz and I work in the global Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP) team. I am mainly responsible for researching, analyzing, and recommending future trends that may impact our workforce.

I am originally from Southern Africa, Mozambique, and grew up in a Muslim family. In 1983, I came to Germany to study economics. In 1996, I received my PhD from Humboldt University in Berlin in statistics and econometrics. I have always been particularly interested in the links between economics, politics and society and this has motivated my personal and professional commitment.

Before joining Allianz, I worked for more than 20 years as a consultant, evaluator and trainer in the fields of decentralization, urban and municipal development, public finance, public sector reform, civil society participation, and monitoring and evaluation of development projects, in various African countries.

On May 2015, I suffered a stroke on my way from South Africa to Germany, which severely limited my oral expression. The stroke has fundamentally changed my life, a disability is now part of my life. After some low points, I am trying to actively cope with this challenge with new energy, flexibility and the necessary humor.

What’s it like to work for Allianz?

Through my work at Allianz, I not only feel that I can contribute and develop my international professional experience, but also that I can get involved in equal opportunities and diversity as an employee with disabilities. I have the impression that Allianz is constantly, actively and successfully working to reduce eventual identity-related career barriers and possible discrimination within the workforce, thus pursuing the goal of offering the same development opportunities to all employees.

How would you describe your working atmosphere?

I have personally experienced at Allianz that diversity, equal opportunities and inclusion are elementary aspects in order to perceive each individual with their personal potential and abilities. This appreciation strengthens self-confidence and awakens team spirit. I notice this particularly in my team, which is precisely why we are capable of great innovative achievements and thus represent an important part of the Allianz culture. We are constantly working on new ideas for the inclusion of people with disabilities or other diversity characteristics such as origin or gender.

At Allianz, I experienced above all openness, great team spirit for cohesion and respectful and appreciative interaction. Colleagues here are actively committd to providing a safe space for diversity to flourish. That is why I am happy to have chosen Allianz. I can only recommend Allianz as an employer. You will find a really good, inclusive and creative working atmosphere and exciting new challenges!
