Turning actuarial theory into practice through the Graduate Program

The Allianz Graduate Program has given Aidan the opportunity to see how actuarial thinking translates beyond the classroom and into real‑world decision‑making. With a strong interest in business and economics, alongside a genuine enjoyment of mathematical problem‑solving, actuarial studies offered a pathway that brought both together.

Encouraged by a high school mentor, Aidan chose actuarial studies for its breadth and flexibility. Through the Graduate Program, he has already seen how those skills can be applied in a variety of ways across the organisation.

“Rotating through different teams has shown me how widely applicable the actuarial skillset really is,” he says. “That exposure has been one of the most valuable parts of the program.”

Seeing risk in a real‑world context

One of the most impactful aspects of Aidan’s graduate experience has been stepping away from theory and into practical applications of risk.

“At university, you often start with a concept and try to imagine how it might apply in the real world,” he explains. “At Allianz, it’s often the other way around.”  Through his rotations, Aidan has worked on specific business problems and learned how to break them down to understand the underlying risks and how best to manage them.

“That shift has made the work feel much more tangible and relevant,” he says.

When it all came together

A key moment of growth for Aidan came when he followed up on a piece of work by asking clarifying questions about what a stakeholder was really trying to achieve. By doing so, he was able to suggest adjustments that better aligned with the intended outcome, delivering a more effective result.

“It showed me the importance of communication,” he reflects. “Understanding the problem properly can be just as important as the technical work itself.”

Finding his approach within actuarial work

Actuarial work can be highly technical and, at times, difficult to communicate. For Aidan, his background in tutoring has helped him find his approach.

“I try to break things down to first principles,” he says. “Asking what we are trying to achieve and what methods are available helps make complex work more accessible.”

This focus on clarity and communication has helped Aidan bridge technical detail and practical application throughout his graduate rotations.

Exploring pathways through the program

The flexibility of the Graduate Program has allowed Aidan to explore different teams and build a broader understanding of the actuarial space.

Through conversations with peers, managers and past graduates, he has gained insight into teams beyond his own rotations, helping him understand how different areas align with his interests.

“By the end of the program, I had a much clearer picture of the actuarial landscape,” he says.

Looking ahead

As Aidan looks to the future, he is focused on continuing to build both his technical expertise and leadership capability.

“I enjoy collaboration and bringing people and ideas together to make something happen,” he says.

For Aidan, the Graduate Program has laid the groundwork for a career that balances strong technical foundations with the ability to connect, influence and create meaningful outcomes.
