We are looking for an Underwriting Team Leader - Marine Liabilities &/or based in London.


Your Team 
You will be part of the Marine team based in Gracechurch street in London which forms part of the wider Marine Line of Business with offices around the Globe. The team is a collaborative, client focused unit which has a technical underwriting approach to its portfolio. It is also a friendly and supportive group.


The Impact You Will Have 
Reporting to the Regional Head of Marine/Global Product Lead Cargo you will lead a team of underwriters to underwrite profitable new and renewal business to meet LoB targets regionally and/or globally as well as negotiating of participation, pricing and terms and conditions for large clients.

You´ll additionally take ownership of large accounts / clients and have ultimate responsibility for accounts within the team as well as to develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients. Leading, developing, training and managing a team will also be an important part of the position. 

Some of your specific responsibilities could include

  • Manage team of Underwriters and delegate tasks to the team in order to achieve the overall results
  • Manage/supervise team client accounts and act as point of referral and/or escalation for issues
  • Manage cost center budget within plan
  • Typically managing and training Senior UWs / Underwriters and Junior UWs 
  • Perform Underwriting strategy and leadership (e.g. Contribute to development and execution of regional Underwriting strategy for LoB)
  • Manage referrals from underwriters and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate
  • Negotiate participation, pricing and terms and conditions with brokers
  • Underwrite and evaluate Natural Catastrophe Accumulation, ensuring an understanding of catastrophe modelling and interpretation of scenarios
  • Ensure compliant Underwriting approach (Underwrite in line with LoB governance framework - e.g. Underwriting Authorities, global MSU, Underwriting Guidelines, Rules and Principles)
  • Proactively support acquisition of new business and retention of existing business  (including client and broker negotiations where necessary)
  • Positively represent AGCS externally to the market and drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including e.g. MMC, ARC, Claims, Operations
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key brokers and clients and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. risk managers)

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • Preferably a bachelor’s degree in Economics, Law, or other appropriate discipline 
  • Completion of professional insurance qualification (e.g. CII)
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in Underwriting profitable business in LoB. Specialised understanding of LoB products and portfolio
  • Specialised understanding of regional / local UK LoB insurance markets and competitor landscape
  • Well recognized established relationships with brokers at peer group level and well established within the market
  • Good understanding of legal and regulatory framework
  • Significant experience working in a complex global matrix organization and leading a team of professionals
  • Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to LoB
  • Analyse current performance against benchmarks applying how the market operates and functions, what the business needs and customer needs
  • Good knowledge of how to design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings
  • Robust understanding of policy administration life cycle, information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings, credit control, cancellation. 
  • Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally and how to "sell" an improvised or prepared audience winning story
  • Ability to analyse highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail; identify and resolve issues
  • Ability to lead and manage a team of underwriters, this includes the ability to delegate tasks, steer team direction/goals, etc.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and result orientation
