To provide a customer focused second and third line infrastructure support service for a large estate of mission critical Linux and Unix servers and associated infrastructure. The Unix team resolves technical issues and delivers projects to Allianz Technology/LV= Group IT standards and the customer’s satisfaction. Individuals will be multi skilled, and will give assistance to other members of the team. They will be able to demonstrate a excellent working knowledge of the systems, operating systems, applications, protocols and networking infrastructure deployed within the Allianz Technology/LV= infrastructure in order to provide an enterprise level, proactive service to the Allianz Technology/LV= community. Individuals will be comfortable with management of incidents, problems and requests and implementation of change aligned with ITIL principles.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Participation in a duty rota covering business-as-usual activities
  • Implementation and ongoing management of new Linux infrastructure to support projects that are delivered by Group IT
  • Performance management and tuning of a large estate of Unix and Linux-based servers supporting various enterprise class applications
  • Implementation and ongoing management of application-layer networking devices (firewalls, load balancers, etc)
  • Ensuring that relevant formal and operational documentation is kept up to date
  • Providing technical input into business continuity planning, and participation in regular reviews and testing
  • Systems and network monitoring (estimating, planning and tuning, identifying and reporting trends and utilisation, alerting on errors)
  • Capacity management of the Unix/Linux estate
  • Resource and workload balancing on shared infrastructure
  • Liaison with suppliers and other external parties to achieve appropriate levels of understanding of new and future technologies that may be beneficial
  • Ensuring that best practice is understood, documented and adhered to
  • Liaising with third party companies and contractors who may carry out work on the UNIX/Linux estate, and ensuring that work complies with AzTech/LV= standards

 

Skills and Experiences Required

  • A broad knowledge of UNIX/Linux platforms and operating system fundamentals
  • Ability to effectively manage a large server estate via best practice configuration management and large-scale automation
  • Understanding of ITIL concepts, including the management of incidents and implementation of change
  • Ability to implement and troubleshoot common technologies such as HTTP, HTTPS, LDAP (client and server-side), Samba, FTP, rsync, MQ Series
  • In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts
  • Ability to diagnose network-related faults and performance issues (taking network packet traces with tcpdump and Wireshark, and using them to identify problems)
  • Broad understanding of network security, including firewalls (ideally PIX and/or Checkpoint)
  • Knowledge of IPSEC VPNs, setup and troubleshooting
  • In-depth knowledge of x86 virtualisation (ideally VMware) and the techniques and tools used to manage it effectively
  • Understanding of network attached storage (ideally Network Appliance), monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of load-balancing concepts, hardware and software (ideally F5). Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems associated with load balancing web applications
  • Liaising with third party companies and contractors who may carry out work on the UNIX/Linux estate, and ensuring that work complies with LV= standards
  • Understanding of Java Virtual Machines, monitoring and performance tuning
  • Knowledge of J2EE application servers, concepts and best practices
  • Application management for off-the-shelf and bespoke line-of-business applications
  • Ability to automate common tasks via scripting in shell, perl or python
  • Strong ability to translate business requirements into robust, supportable technical solutions
  • Team player but with the ability to work alone as required
  • Ability to maintain a strategic as well as day-to-day approach to activities
  • Past experience in running a comparable server estate
