Job Purpose/Role
In coordination with the Head of Claims - Canada, direct the strategy and handling of all Short Tail claims in Canada. Work closely with Underwriting and Market Management to develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients. Work collaboratively with Legal & Compliance, Finance, Actuarial, CCO and other key stakeholders to ensure all aspects of claims are administered within guidelines. Manage the day to day function of the Claims team in Canada to support the LoB's and provide technical claim guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Claim Strategy:

Assist with the execution of local Claims strategy for line of business.
Contribute to the development of global Claims LoB strategy.
Support the development of cross LoB r regional strategy, in line with R&M, Claims Head and Regional CEO.
Collaborate with Claim management, claims legal, and other claims product teams to develop strategies and
business plans to reduce claim cost/expenses.

  • Claim Targets:

Assist with driving the achievement of financial targets (e.g. full combined ratio) and contribute to annual
target setting for claims.
Ensure claims reserves and settlements are consistent with exposures.

  • Market Management:

Proactively support acquisition of new business and retention of existing business.
Coordinate with local MMC to drive successful execution of strategic plan.

  • Claims Approach and Compliance:

Ensure claim handling consistency and discipline through management of the claims file review process in
accordance with corporate and local guidelines.
Provide technical claims guidance and settlement authority.
Evaluate and assign appropriate claims autonomy to team; including auditing files to ensure autonomy levels
and claim practices are adhered to.

  • Leading and Managing Claims Team:

Lead and manage regional team, including direct reports and matrix management of functional reports.
Assist with managing cost centre budget within plan Continuous evaluation and execution of staff
development, including formal development plans.

  • Relationship Management:

Positively represent AGCS internally within the Allianz Group, and externally to the market.
Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Claims process, including e.g. MMC, ARC, Underwriting
Claims, Operations.
Responsible for providing Region Claims Head with regular updates regarding events/activites in the
region/product area.
Seek guidance from Region Claims Head on issues that will have an impact on the region and Company.

  • Referrals and Compliance:

Ensure all claims handled within authority limits, and in line with AGCS Claims complex procedures and
Support establishment of claims management procedures on new business accounts in association with
clients, brokers and loss adjusters.
Undertake audits of internal adjusters and external service providers as appropriate.


Key Requirements/Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor Degree: Preferrably degree in Economics, Law, or other appropriate discpline.
  • Certification: Completion of professional insurance qualification (e.g. CII)
  • Minimum 11+ years: Significant experience (minimum of c. 7 years) in Claims Management position in relevant line of business.
  • Minimum 11+ years: Demonstratable track record of managing claims expenses.
  • Minimum 11+ years: Successful track record of leadership in direct teams and complex matrix environments.
  • Minimum 11+ years: Experience of remotely managing and developing teams across numerous locations.
  • Minimum 11+ years: Fluent in English.
  • Claims Handling: Ability to assess exposures and mitigate expenses.
  • Claim Management: Manage the claims for LoB, monitor claims exposure and reserves; Analyze trends and scenario to develop and implement claim handling best practices.
  • Policy: Provide interpretation of coverages and manage the denial and acceptance of Claims for LoB.
  • Market Management: Apply the knowledge of how the market operates and functions, the business needs and customer needs.
  • Advanced: Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail, identify and resolve issues before they transpire.
  • Intermediate: Strategic Planning: Ability to develop, implement, and communicate strategies to address important trends or changes in the business.
