Job Purpose/Role

  • Performs audit functions for small to mid-sized risks of increasing complexity, usually with a minimum of classifications and locations.
  • Accurately completes audits and communicates finding to insured, underwriting and producers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide and analyze financial and operational information which supports the writing, pricing and retention of profitable business. Determines earned premium on casualty coverages and other auditable exposures.
  • Conducts physical audits: Examines primary and secondary source records and documents and determines which are necessary to accurately audit the operations. Interviews and observes the operations of the insured.
  • Documents the classification, operations and ownership of each named insured. Confirms all locations.
  • Validates workers' compensation claims coding. Classifies and secures the basis of premium for each insured audited. Adheres to state filings, DOI and Bureau requirements.
  • Maintains familiarity with applicable insurance manuals, premium audit manuals, references, guides and related materials.
  • Works with underwriting at policy quote, issue, mid-term and expiration to determine adequacy of premium deposits and accuracy of classifications, locations, operations and named insured's, as requested.
  • Determines if employer/employee relationship exits on risks which employ independent contractors and makes the appropriate premium charges.
  • Determines and reports on risk exposures which are not shown under the policy contract and makes coverage and premium charges as required.
  • Recommends to underwriting termination of coverage or corrective action to be taken if insured's records are inadequate, the financial situation is unsatisfactory, the insured's premises are unsatisfactory, or the insured is uncooperative.
  • Provides classification assurance on policies through the use of pre-quote and pre-audit surveys as requested.
  • Conducts technical training on classifications for regional underwriting.
  • Resolves audited earned premium discrepancies and other premium audit related disputes with insured, agents, underwriting and collections department.


Key Requirements/Skills/Experience

  • B.S. or B.A. degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Twelve semester hours or 18-quarter hours of Accounting and Financial Analysis at the college level required.
  • 3-5 years of auditing experience
  • CPCU and/or Associate in Premium Auditing (APA) desired
  • Knowledge of audit techniques and principles; insurance principles, coverages and classifications for workers' compensation, general liability and automobile lines of business.
  • Knowledge of financial ratios, accounting records and their relationship. Ability to resolve test audit differences.
  • Specialized knowledge of specific lines of business or business operations (e.g., entertainment, manufacturers, etc.)/ national/local target industries and programs.
