Heather, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi! My name is Heather and I joined the Allianz family six years ago in the Global Diversity Office at Allianz SE. Since 2016, I’ve been working in the AllianzU team driving learning technology topics, like our global implementation of LinkedIn Learning. Before moving to Germany in 2012 for my master’s degree studies, I spent my first 28 years in the United States – specifically, in the South. I grew up in Georgia and, in the six years between my study programs, I lived and worked in Alabama. In the South, things are a little more conservative...and that means some people might not only be uncomfortable with the topic of “gay rights” and the LGBTQ+ spectrum, but they’re sometimes even actively against it. Coming from that kind of background, a diverse and inclusive work environment is incredibly important to me – that’s why I’m so proud to be an employee of Allianz.

How would you describe the culture at Allianz?

At Allianz, I’ve experienced a workplace where I can “bring my whole self” to work – there’s no need to hide parts of my life. It isn’t just a standard statement in job postings – it’s a part of the company culture that allows all colleagues to be themselves. I’ll never forget telling my previous boss I had gotten engaged; the next Monday, he gave me a “congratulations” card signed by his whole family. After spending years hoping that no one at work would ask me about my boyfriend or husband, it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders.

How does Allianz support the LGBTQ+ community?

Over the past few years, Allianz has continued to expand its support for the LGBTQ+ community, for example by forming a global Allianz Pride Board to support the topic around the world and across entities or participating with a truck in the Christopher Street Day (Pride in Germany) parade. When I look around the Allianz world, I see similar shows of support in so many countries, showing that Allianz is united in supporting the LGBTQ+ community. 
At Allianz, it’s not just about diversity – all companies are diverse in one way or another – it’s about inclusion. If you’re looking for a place to bring your whole self to work, why not Allianz?
